Lemmy hosts link-sharing and discussion communities, and connects to other Lemmy servers through federation.

Settings

Setting	Meaning
Hostname	The app's address, and its identity on the federated network
Instance name	Name shown in the header and to other servers. At most 20 characters.
Admin password	The password of the admin account. 10 to 60 characters.

The instance name and admin password are used once, when the app first starts. To change them later, use Lemmy's own settings. Changing them with Edit afterwards has no effect.

warning

Do not change the hostname after the app is in use. Every user and community address includes it, and other Lemmy servers do not recognize the app under a new hostname. See Hostname.

First sign-in

1. Select Open on the app's card.
2. Sign in with username admin and the admin password.

Configure registration, the site description and other options in Lemmy's Admin settings.

Apps

Lemmy works in a browser and with third-party apps; see join-lemmy.org/apps.

File access

SFTP shows Lemmy's uploaded images and media, read-only.

Email

Lemmy sends email, such as verification messages and password resets, from lemmy@freepod.eu. See Email.
