Custom domain

An app can use a domain you own instead of a hostname under your subdomain: either a name within the domain, such as photos.example.com, or the domain itself, such as example.com.

1. Create the DNS record

The record depends on the hostname:

HostnameRecord
A name within your domain, such as photos.example.comCNAME to freepod.eu
The domain itself, such as example.comALIAS, ANAME or flattened CNAME to freepod.eu, if your provider offers one

A name within your domain

Create a CNAME record:

FieldValue
TypeCNAME
NameThe part in front of your domain, such as photos for photos.example.com
Targetfreepod.eu
TTLAny; the provider's default is fine
  1. In the Cloudflare dashboard, select the domain and open DNS → Records.
  2. Select Add record.
  3. Type: CNAME. Name: photos. Target: freepod.eu.
  4. Set Proxy status to DNS only (grey cloud). Freepod cannot use a proxied record.
  5. Select Save.

Other providers have the same fields under similar names. If the provider appends your domain to the target, end the target with a period: freepod.eu.

The domain itself

A domain itself cannot have a CNAME record. Some DNS providers offer an equivalent that follows freepod.eu automatically, called ALIAS, ANAME or CNAME flattening. If your provider does not, the domain itself cannot be used with Freepod; use a name within it instead, such as www.example.com.

Cloudflare flattens a CNAME record on the domain itself automatically.

  1. In the Cloudflare dashboard, select the domain and open DNS → Records.
  2. Select Add record.
  3. Type: CNAME. Name: @. Target: freepod.eu.
  4. Set Proxy status to DNS only (grey cloud).
  5. Select Save.

Remove any A and AAAA records for the domain itself that do not come from the ALIAS or flattened record.

2. Use the hostname

  1. When launching the app, or with Edit on an existing app, select Custom domain under Hostname and enter the full hostname, such as photos.example.com or example.com.
  2. Select Launch or Update.

Freepod checks the record with your domain's own DNS servers, so a new record is seen immediately, and refuses the hostname if the record is missing or points elsewhere. Once accepted, Freepod obtains an HTTPS certificate from Let's Encrypt and renews it automatically.

Keep the record in place: updates to the app and certificate renewal depend on it.

Requirements

  • If your DNS provider can proxy traffic, such as Cloudflare's proxied records, turn proxying off for the record. A proxied record points to the provider's addresses instead of Freepod's.
  • If your domain has CAA records, they must allow letsencrypt.org.
